Mobius has designed and manufactured the solar electric drive units from the ground up keeping the clients needs in mind. All equipment has been vibration tested, thermal cycle tested, impact tested. The components have been designed to withstand the harsh South African roads and conditions.

Reliable and Non-Invasive Operation

  • The solar electric drive is non – invasive and does not interfere with any of the vehicles normal operations, and operates as a completely independent unit. All vehicle and Thermo King warranties are not effected.
  • The Mobius unit operates independently, providing electrical power to the OEM refrigeration system, enabling it to function seamlessly on electrical energy.
  • The units are designed to operate for 10 – 15 years.
  • The inverters and batteries used are custom made specifically for use with Thermo King refrigeration units

Modular Design for Flexibility

The solar electric drive is completely interchangeable between vehicles and different refrigeration units. Each solar electric drive can operate the entire range of Thermo King products and can be fitted to trailers and rigid trucks. The entire battery range can be interchanged between vehicles. All component parts of the units are modular, replaceable, and interchangeable. As all products are identical, it is possible to interchange between units. This ensures that large fleet owners have maximum flexibility in implementing Mobius across their fleet.


We have also adopted modularity at component level to keep maintenance costs down. Individual battery cells and electronic components can be replaced separately. Normally the entire battery or inverter needs to be replaced if faulty, but Mobius allows for replacement of small individual components.

Advanced Safety Innovations

Mobius is the only unit globally that operates from low voltage, making it extremely safe. The batteries, solar PV, and equipment operate at 48V, which is safe to the touch. Mobius has also built in over 30 safety features to ensure driver and road user safety, including:

  • Automatic fire extinguisher in the battery compartment
  • Nano-second switches to disconnect batteries and other equipment in case of electrical faults
  • Automotive-grade batteries that do not catch fire in crushing and penetration tests.
  • Batteries and electronic equipment designed to withstand vehicle roll through 90deg.
